This dress is made entirely of paint samples that are fastened together with eyelets and wire. The colorful to black gradient is inspired by the song “Black” by Pearl Jam with the lyrics that sing, “And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything, all the pictures had all been washed in black, tattooed everything, all the love gone bad, turned my world to black, tattooed all I see.”

We were each assigned a rock song to dissect and make a fashion piece from it, and I truly felt the deep anguish and pain in the singer’s voice and wanted to represent it through seemingly sharp objects that in reality are fragile, delicate pieces of paper that can easily rip apart and turn to black.

Medium: Paint Samples

Sophomore Year, 2019

The Process

The dress went through many iterations and means of fastening the paint samples together. From starting with crumpled pieces of paper to the help of a Barbie doll, there were many sleepless nights spent perfecting the system for how the dress would be created!

Once the pattern was established, thousands of individual triangles of various sizes, colors, and forms were cut out and each hand formed into a system that was then fastened into a bigger chain until row after row was created. Eventually, an entire dress was formed!
